Scientists heal paralyzed mice with novel spinal cord implant

A new scientific experiment, led by Professor Tal Dvir at Tel Aviv University, has successfully made paralyzed mice walk again after receiving spinal cord implants, according to Futurism. Of the 15 mice receiving implants, 12 were able to walk normally again.

The experiment’s novel technology and approach used multiple samples of human spinal cells which were later implanted in the mice. The scientists hope to replicate this process for paralyzed human patients. However, to do so they would use a patient’s own cells to grow a new, unique spine. If the spinal cord implant on humans was approved, the study’s authors concluded that a personalized hydrogel would be created to implant into patients.

Perhaps someday, many forms of paralysis in humans will be a thing of the past.
