Fiji has become the first emerging market to issue a sovereign green bond, raising 100 million Fijian dollars, or US$50 million, to support climate change mitigation and adaption.
That money will go towards efforts to improve the energy efficiency of Apple’s own facilities, as well as throughout its supply chain, by financing renewable energy, procuring more recycled and renewable source materials so as to reduce its need to mine for them.
Globally, total green bonds issuance stood at $21.76 billion during the first quarter of 2017, up nearly 42 per cent from the issuance during the same period last year, according to the Climate Bonds Initiative.
