Mattel has released a Tribute Collection Barbie in honor of transgender actress and activist Laverne Cox’s 50th birthday, according to LGBTQ Nation. The doll marks the first time the company has ever sold a transgender doll.

The doll features Cox’s trademark blonde hair, a red tulle gown, heeled boots, silver earrings, and a sparkling silver metallic bodysuit. Mattel launched the Tribute Collection with the intention of honoring women who have inspired change throughout history. Comedian Lucille Ball and Queen Elizabeth II are featured in the collection with Cox.

The release of Barbie’s first-ever transgender doll is monumental for promoting LGBTQ+ awareness, especially considering the dolls’ checkered history promoting limiting gender stereotypes.
