About Course in Miracles
A Course in Miracles (CIM) was created by Dr. Helen Schucman in 1965 through the Foundation for Inner Peace. The Foundation for Inner Peace is a charitable organization and is the only organization designated by the scribe, Dr. Helen Schucman, to “publish, distribute and discuss” the CIM. Based in New York, the unique spiritual self-study program is designed to awaken us to the truth of our oneness with God and Love.
The CIM is arranged throughout several textbooks as a teaching device. It consists of three books: a 669-page Text, a 488-page Workbook for Students, and a 92-page Manual for Teachers. The order in which students choose to use the books, and the ways in which they study them, depend on their particular needs and preferences.
A Course in Miracles is a universal, metaphysical, self-study program of spiritual psychology. Its goal is to awaken readers to the truth of their oneness with God by removing the obstacles that block an awareness of love’s presence.The Course in Miracles uses Christian terminology to express this idea, teaching that we are nothing less than “the Son of God.”
In 1965 Dr. Helen Schucman, an academic medical psychologist, felt a calling to write a course about spiritual growth and learning. Alongside William Thetford, Schucman began writing about her experiences and spiritual awakening which would eventually become the Course in Miracles.
The Text is largely theoretical, and sets forth the concepts on which the Course in Miracles’ thought system is based. Its ideas contain the foundation for the Workbook’s lessons. It emphasizes application rather than theory, and experience rather than theology. It makes a fundamental distinction between the real and the unreal; between knowledge and perception. The Course in Miracles mainly pushes a Christian ideology through the lens of a modern world, claiming that modernity can over complicate our lives, relationships, and experiences. The CIM was created to change our perception of thinking and create a better, more spiritual, world.
