About Miracle Food Network

Miracle Food Network is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization that supports communities fighting hunger and poverty through safe haven support, meals and nutrition, labor force development, and other services

Miracle Food Network (MFN) is a non-profit organization serving in Whatcom and Skagit County, Washington, that supports communities fighting hunger and poverty through safe-haven support, meals and nutrition, labor force development, and other services.

The non-profit organization attacks the war on hunger by supplying food hub sponsorships and intercepting and redirecting food surplus and waste. Miracle Food Network empowers people trapped in poverty’s grip through meaningful work, safe shelters, and community support systems.

MFN was started out of a disgust for how much perfectly good food was being dumped in landfills, when so many people were still food insecure. The U.S. EPA estimates that 1/3 of food generated ends up wasted, which would be an estimated 80 billion pounds of food every year in the U.S., alone. While there may be legislation to help stop this waste coming in the future, MFN is working now to cut down on how much food we throw out.

With the support of community members, through both volunteers and donors, Miracle Food Network is able to save almost a million pounds of food each year. From January to November of 2022, MFN rescued 871,111 pounds of food & goods from the landfill. Not only is this the equivalent of 729,800 meals served, but it also means that 399,506,616 gallons of water have been saved and 475,728 Co2E not emitted from landfills.

Miracle Food Network distributes food to Bellingham, Ferndale, Blaine, Sumas, Lynden, Birch Bay, and Maple Falls along with some areas in Skagit County. They rescue whatever food is fit for humans and send the rest to local pig farmers. The rest of the product, that is fit-for-human consumption, is driven to 14 established hubs in Whatcom County: five county food banks, several pantries across the WWU, NWIC & WCC campuses,  three Whatcom school districts, and door-to-door in partnership with Project DASH (a DoorDash program).
