Greece is now offering subsidies that encourage citizens to phase out old refrigerators and air conditioners for more energy-efficient alternatives. The new subsidies allow households to buy three new appliances at a discounted rate between 30-50%, according to Reuters

Hundreds of thousands of households will receive brand new appliances – freezers, air conditioners, and fridges – which will reduce the total amount of energy consumption equal to that used by 100,000 people. The program will cost 150 million euros, but will allow citizens to save 40 million dollars in oil and gas. In the last year, Greece has also spent over 7 billion euros to help its citizens pay for their electricity and fuel.

As countries around the world begin offering subsidies to fund energy-efficient programs, and citizens take advantage of them, we all take one step closer to a clean energy future. Small technological improvements in the home can lead to widespread environmental change.
