Melancholy

It seems every year around this time, a dull melancholy sets in for me. It’s been gloomy for months. The days are long and cold. Everyone seems to retreat to their homes and hibernate. And summer still seems far away.

Blech. For me, the world begins to feel less bright and less full of possibility.

I try to remind myself that melancholy too is an important, if not essential, part of our journey. It forces us to re-examine what makes us feel alive. It asks us to consciously rekindle whatever spark has been lost, whatever parts of ourselves we’ve let fester.

Maybe if we can just truly be with and listen to our melancholy, it actually becomes the pathway to the insight, purpose, and inspiration that feels lost.
